Help & FAQ

Everything you need to get started.

What is Aluma?

A mastery-first AI tutor built for school. It connects classes and assignments, tracks what you know, and coaches you toward the answer without completing the work for you.

Parents, guardians and educators

Parents and guardians have their own app at app.aluma.fun/family: your kids' assignments, grades, calendar, streaks and study time, and simple rules for kids under 18. Under 13, the rules come first; from 13, how they're doing comes first. Parents never see chats.

Tutors, learning specialists, teachers and coaches use app.aluma.fun/educators: every student they follow on one roster, what each one is working on, where they're stuck and what they've mastered, the calendar and the plan. When a student (or a parent, under 13) allows it, an educator can send a reminder, add to-dos and study time to the student's planner or move them, and set which reminders Aluma sends. Students see who did what.

Students invite either one from Tools > Family, and choose what an educator can do under People who help you.

What does beta mean?

Aluma has not fully launched. Aluma 1.0 is coming this Christmas. Beta users are testing the real product while we improve reliability, connectors, tutoring, and Mastery tracking. Features can change, and bugs are expected. Feedback from beta users directly affects what ships.

How do the plans work?

Free - 25 study-tool requests/day (quizzes, flashcards, practice sets, and similar tools); clarifying chat does not count; during beta also includes Lumi Anywhere (usage still counts). Starter - 40 messages/day, AI Tutor guidance, interactive graphs & step-by-step math, school connectors, plus Lumi Anywhere after beta. Professional - 200/day with Step-by-step mode for deeper reasoning plus Lumi Anywhere school sync in Chrome, 7-day trial once paid plans open. Max - 600/day, switching between Fast and Step-by-step. Chats and classes stay in sync across web & Lumi Anywhere.

What is "Lumi Anywhere"?

Lumi Anywhere is included for every beta account while Aluma is in beta. It’s Aluma’s Chrome extension: a side panel with your study buddy on any webpage (homework sites, Google Docs, Canvas, YouTube, and more). During beta every beta account can use it (including Free); chats still count toward your plan caps. After launch it stays with Starter and all higher plans. You choose what Lumi can see: Whole page (the tab's readable text and available video captions, including loaded transcript lines outside the visible area, plus a capture of the visible tab) and/or Point at part (draw around one part of the page - Lumi answers about that part and uses the rest of the page as background). Lumi guides; it never fills homework or submits work.

Install: Add Lumi Anywhere from the Chrome Web Store. Then click the Lumi toolbar icon → Sign in to Aluma. Needs Chrome 116 or newer.

Opening it: click the Lumi toolbar icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+L (⌘+Shift+L on a Mac). Chats sync to your Aluma History, so you can start in the side panel and finish in the app.

What gets shared: page text, captions, and images go to Aluma only when you turn on Whole page or Point at part for that message. With both off, only a small assessment status, reason code, and confidence level may accompany your message; these contain no page URL, title, text, or images. Lumi may fetch available caption tracks from the current site or YouTube to prepare them locally, but never clicks Show transcript or turns captions on. The line under the message box describes your page-sharing choices. School sync is separate: on Connectors, tap Connect or Sync after you install Lumi and sign in with the same Aluma account. Lumi then reads assignment titles, due dates, links, and available activity type, assessment status, and progress from the school tab you already have open, including Edgenuity. Aluma never sees your school password. After that, Lumi 1.5.2 and later keep a site you have synced current while Aluma is open: about every half hour a background tab opens that site, reads the same fields, and closes itself. It never takes you to that tab, never signs in for you, and never reads a site you have not synced yourself. If you choose Have Lumi sign in, you can tap Remember so this Chrome keeps that school login for the next fill — still on this computer only, never sent to Aluma. Forget or Disconnect this browser clears it.

Live assessments: Lumi detects quiz and exam take pages and refuses academic help during a live or proctored assessment.

Signing out: use the door icon in the header (or Disconnect this browser on the upgrade wall). That clears the sign-in and the saved side-panel conversation from that browser. It doesn't sign you out of Aluma anywhere else. To invalidate the connection everywhere, change your Aluma password.

How do I cancel?

Paid plans aren’t open yet, so during the beta there is nothing to cancel and nothing is charged. Once they open, Settings → Billing → Manage subscription opens the Stripe portal where you can cancel. Access continues until the end of your paid period.

Can I export or delete my data?

Yes - Settings → Privacy → Data controls. Export downloads everything as JSON; Delete account removes your data permanently.

Is the AI always right?

No. It's a study aid and can make mistakes - always double-check important answers, and follow your school's academic-integrity rules.

Keyboard shortcuts

⌘K opens the command palette. Enter sends, Shift+Enter adds a newline.
